Engineering Admissions in Pakistan 2026: 6 Tests, 40+ Universities, One Timeline
UNiGUIDE Team
Head of Big Pictures
Engineering admissions in Pakistan run through six different testing routes, not one. ECAT covers Punjab's public sector, ETEA covers KPK, and NUST, FAST, COMSATS and GIKI each run their own separate entry test that does not accept ECAT or ETEA scores. Merit is almost always calculated from FSc (or A-Level equivalence) plus the entry test, but the weighting differs per university, so an aggregate from one formula cannot be checked against another university's cutoff. This guide maps every route, its test, and its calendar so you can build one plan instead of six.
At a glance
- Testing routes
- 6 (ECAT, ETEA, NET, FAST, COMSATS, GIKI)
- Typical merit weighting
- FSc 40% + Entry test 60%
- Common eligibility floor
- 60% in FSc Pre-Engineering
- Earliest registration opens
- December–January
- A-Level route
- IBCC equivalence, then same formula
The six engineering testing routes
The single most expensive mistake in Pakistani engineering admissions is preparing for the wrong test. A student aiming for FAST who spends a year on ECAT preparation has prepared for an exam FAST does not accept. Start by identifying which test your target university actually requires.
| Route | Conducted by | Accepted by | Typical window |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECAT | UET Lahore | UET Lahore, UET Taxila, BZU, GCU Lahore | Register Feb–Mar, test Jun |
| ETEA | Government of KPK | UET Peshawar, Agriculture Univ., Univ. of Peshawar | Register Apr–May, test Jul |
| NET | NUST | NUST (all campuses, all programs) | 3 rounds: Dec, Mar, Jun |
| FAST Test | FAST NUCES | FAST NUCES campuses | May–Jul, multiple sittings |
| COMSATS Test | COMSATS | COMSATS campuses | Jun–Aug |
| GIKI Test | GIK Institute | GIKI Topi | Jun |
How engineering merit is actually calculated
Most Pakistani engineering universities weight the entry test more heavily than FSc, which surprises students who assume their board result carries most of the weight. In practice the entry test usually decides the merit list.
- Typical public-sector weighting: FSc 40% + Entry test 60%.
- Some private universities weight FSc more heavily to reward consistent schooling.
- A-Level students are converted to an FSc equivalent through IBCC before the formula is applied.
- Matric marks are frequently folded into the FSc component rather than counted separately.
A realistic timeline
- 1October–December: shortlist 8–10 universities across at least two testing routes.
- 2December–January: NUST NET Round 1 registration opens — the earliest meaningful deadline of the cycle.
- 3February–March: ECAT registration; begin full syllabus coverage.
- 4April–July: test window. Sit every test you registered for, even backups.
- 5July–August: merit lists publish in waves; keep documents ready rather than waiting.
Clearing the confusion
Clearing the confusion: 'ECAT gets me into engineering everywhere'
This is the most persistent myth in Pakistani admissions and it costs students a full year. ECAT is a Punjab public-sector test. NUST, FAST, COMSATS and GIKI do not accept it, and neither does any KPK public university, which uses ETEA. If your shortlist includes any of those, you must sit their test as well — registration for each closes separately and none of them accept another university's score.
Build your shortlist against real eligibility and dates instead of guessing.
Browse universitiesFrequently asked questions
Which test do I need for engineering admissions in Pakistan?
It depends entirely on the university. ECAT is for Punjab's public sector (UET Lahore, UET Taxila, BZU, GCU Lahore), ETEA is for KPK, and NUST, FAST NUCES, COMSATS and GIKI each run their own separate entry test that does not accept ECAT or ETEA scores.
Is ECAT accepted by NUST or FAST?
No. NUST requires its own NET, and FAST NUCES requires its own admission test. Neither accepts ECAT, ETEA or any other university's entrance score.
What is the typical merit formula for engineering in Pakistan?
Most Pakistani engineering universities use FSc 40% plus entry test 60%. A-Level students are first converted to an FSc equivalent through IBCC, then the same formula applies.
Can A-Level students apply for engineering in Pakistan?
Yes. Obtain an IBCC equivalence certificate, then apply through the same merit formula as FSc students. Allow several weeks for IBCC processing, as it is a common cause of missed deadlines.
When do engineering admissions in Pakistan usually start?
The earliest registrations open in December to January for NUST's first NET round, with most other tests registering between February and July. Merit lists publish from July onward.
